Conclusion

Though there remains a need for substantive legal change to fully protect the rights of unmarried cohabitants, current law provides many ways for partners to protect their legal rights.   Proper planning and careful documentation may safeguard many of the legal rights that affect the lives of unmarried cohabitants.  Initially, unmarried cohabitants may establish such planning by entering into a well-drafted living-together contract.  As other complex issues such as shared property or custody of minors arise in the relationship, the unmarried partners may find some of the suggestions on this website helpful in protecting their rights.
