Past Due Child Support It is important to understand that the law does not allow retroactive modifications of child support. This means that, with limited exceptions, you can try to change your child support obligations only from the date you file a motion to modify child support. You generally cannot go back and change past amounts of child support due even if you can show that you could not pay the past support for good reasons. Therefore, if changes occur, it is important that you file your request to modify child support right away. If you are trying to collect past due child support, the most helpful first step is to contact the Child Support Enforcement Administration.
