Last reviewed 01/15/2008 If you fear you may become homeless If you are not homeless yet, it may be possible to avoid becoming homeless by contacting the Maryland emergency assistance programs in your county. Often these programs can help in paying rent, utilities, medical bills or food. If you are homeless now, emergency assistance programs may help with temporary shelter, motel placement or security deposits and/or first month's rent. Churches and other religious organizations
may also offer emergency help. Sometimes these organizations are listed under "crisis services" in the yellow pages of the phone book. You may also want to contact any religious group with which you have a connection to see if there may be help available. National Coalition for the Homeless, a national nonprofit operates a
website that includes some useful tips for people who are in danger of becoming homeless in an article by Russell Sjoblom who was recently homeless with his family. Another page with practical advice from the National Coalition for the Homeless. Source: Maryland State Law Library Last date review (no legal content) 01/15/08)
