Assisted Living Facilities:
Finding
ALF Insurance
|
Assisted
living facility operators in Maryland have used the following companies.
These are not recommendations but merely a place to start looking for a new
policy or replacing an existing policy.

Assisted Living Insurance Center - a marketing website located
in Hanover, Pa., operated by
the PCH Mutual Insurance
Company. PCALIC provides tailored coverage for assisted living facilities in “select
states,” including Maryland. Kimberly Miller, Manager of Elesy Manor,
Baltimore County, uses PCALIC and recommends it. It describes itself as a "nonprofit, special purpose
insurance company providing professional and liability insurance to assisted
living facilities in 9 states, including Maryland."

Edenbaum, owner and manager of Eden Homes, Montgomery County, uses this
company and recommends it and its agents in Richlands, Va.

Communities,” including assisted living facilities. Several agents in the
Baltimore area offer Guide One policies.
Church Mutual Insurance Company - Claims to have insured assisted living
facilities for more than 30 years. It currently writes policies in 37
states, including Maryland.
Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company - Offers “Senior Living insurance
solutions for assisted and independent living” in Maryland through its
“Senior Living Agency network.”
Tips for ALF Operators on
Insurance Purchases
-
Before you buy – Make sure
that the company is licensed to write policies in Maryland. The Maryland
Insurance Administration has an on-line searchable database of
active insurance companies. Here is more information on how to
use the database or to search for agents, agencies and brokers
licensed to do business in Maryland. Also, consider finding out the
financial stability rating of the company. For more
information see the brochure on services offered by the
Maryland Insurance Administration (PDF).
-
After you buy – If you have
a complaint, first contact the company and document your interaction
with the company representative. If your complaint is not resolved, you
can file a complaint with the
Maryland Insurance Administration on-line or in writing. See their
website for the forms and tips on how to write a complaint letter. Also
see contact information for the Administration.
Important Note - If you
are a provider in Prince George's County, Baltimore City, or Baltimore
County, and you want to participate in the Senior Assisted Group Home
Subsidy Program, you must carry liability insurance in order to be
approved by the Department of Aging area agency on aging. For all
other counties, liability insurance is not required for approval.
