Law suit reimbursement for homeowner repair expenses for plastic piping

Houses built in the last 30 years may have certain types of problems for which compensation may be due as the result of a settlement of certain class action lawsuits.  If you have had a certain type of plastic plumbing installed and have leaks, you may be eligible for reimbursement.

Polybutylene plumbing

Houses built between 1978 and 1995 may have polybutylene (PB) plumbing. If you have this type of piping, you may qualify for replacement piping. (The usual cost of pipe replacements around $5,000.) Your PB plumbing system or PB yard service line must have been installed between 1/1/78 and 7/31/95. These lines may have defects that casue leaks. As the result of these defects, a lawsuit was brought on behalf of everyone who had problems with these pipes. The lawsuit was successful and a settlement fund of approximately $1 billion was created.

  • Who is covered? -. You may qualify if you presently own (or have previously owned) a home plumbed with a polybutylene plumbing system or a polybutylene yard service line that was installed between January 1, 1978 through July 31, 1995 and your home has experienced a “qualifying leak”.
  • Deadline to File a Claim Form – If your leak occurred before 8/21/95, you must have filed a claim by August 1997. If your leak occurred after that date, the deadlines to file range from 2005 to 212 depending on the type of home. See the Consumer Plumbing Recovery Center website.
  • Who operates the Consumer Plumbing Recovery Center website? The site is run by a third party, not-for-profit corporation approved by the court, that is responsible for administering the terms of COX vs. Shell, et al. national class action settlement. The Consumer Plumbing Recovery Center (CPRC) was established following the settlement agreement reached among the parties to the law suit. The CORC is responsible for handling benefit claims for the public who meet certain standards and own a house. The CPRC handles claims and manages the Settlement Fund for and under the continuing supervision of the Court.
