BNI is a non-profit citizen’s organization established in 1959. It operates statewide with a representative 36 Member Board of Directors.

BNI's purpose is to help maintain viable interracial communities by:

  1. fighting block busting, racial steering, and racial harassment in cooperation with other appropriate agencies;
  2. create an open housing market by educating the public and the housing industry on state, federal, and local laws forbidding discrimination, by investigating complaints of housing discrimination, and
  3. improving tenant-landlord relations by information to landlords and tenants on landlord-tenant problems and encouraging the formation of tenant organizations.

Maryland residents can call the BNI Tenant-Landlord Counseling Service for information on tenant-landlord problems at 410-243-6007 or 1-800-487-6007, Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 4 PM.  Walk-in counseling is not available.

Maryland residents who feel they may have been discriminated against in a housing situation may call the BNI Fair Housing Program at 410-243-4400, Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
