Mobile Home Buying and Selling, Standards, Defects and Making Complaints
  • Some practical information  from the Maryland Attorney General, on buying and selling a mobile home, evictions and making complaints.

  • The Manufactured Housing Program from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), sets out the requirements that manufactures must meet. The website also offers information on warranties, instillation and set up, and buying and making complaints.

  • A Consumer's Guide to Manufactured Housing. From the Manufactured Housing Institute in cooperation with the Federal Trade Commission's Office of Consumer & Business Education.

  • National Consumer Law Center, a reputable national nonprofit legal organization offers  advice for mobile home owners through a booklet sold for approximately $12.00.

  • Issues in Manufactured Housing Research Report from AARP, (a national nonprofit organization working to assist seniors) describe some of the problems faced by mobile home owners and some of the changes in the law sought by AARP (2007). It is useful to show gaps in the current law.

Making Complaints:
First,
contact the retailer who sold you the home
Second,
contact the manufacturer.

Then:

  • If a complaint is still not resolved, you can call 800-927-2891, or contact the Maryland Office of the Manufactured Housing Program.

  • You can also contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at 877-382-4357. The FTC does not resolve individual complaints. However, if enough complaints are filed against a particular business to establish a pattern, then the FTC will investigate the company.
