Telephone Tax Refund

Anyone who paid federal taxes on long-distance landline, wireless, or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service between February 28, 2003 and August 1, 2006 is eligible to receive a refund on this year’s tax return.

Individuals have two options:

  • You can simply fill out an additional line on your tax returns and receive a standard refund of $30-$60 (depending on the number of exemptions claimed). You do not need to collect old phone bills to file for the standard refund; OR

  • If you believe you are owed more than the standard refund, you may review your phone bills from the eligible time period, calculate your refund, fill out a new additional form (Form 8913), and attach it to your regular income-tax returns.

For more information on eligibility, how to file, and the reasons for the refund.
